JUDGING
Liya: Hello lovely ladies, and welcome to your first judging of the competition! Since there are so many of you, I plan on sending two girls home this week to make things easier, but since I don't really have past performances to work off of, we did two shoots to let me see what you are capable of. The first shoot was to make your brand, in which you had to exemplify what you had been assigned; and in the second shoot, you needed to break your brand and show that you are not just a one-trick pony. Let's get to it, starting with...the commercial girls!
COMMERCIAL GIRLS
AndieMaking: I placed you in commercial because of your naturally youthful and innocent look, and I'm glad you used that to your advantage in this shoot. You had one shot that was more commercial, but I decided that this was just commercial enough; not like Seventeen commercial, but upper-end catalog or Teen Vogue commercial. You look very cute and fresh and young, and you sell the outfit and shoes very well. Your eyes are a little blank, but in a doll-like sort of way that actually works. Good job!
Breaking: Your film wasn't as high fashion as I would've liked, but this is just couture enough to potentially work. It's a very haunting photo, you look like you are being possessed. Your eyes look glazed with shock and fear, and your bone structure looks fantastic. I wish you had done more with your pose though, the way you are just clutching the skirt with one hand is a little awkward and the other limp hand is just kinda boring. It's a good photo, but it doesn't quite wow me.
CaraMaking: What a great photo to start out with! Since there is only one negative, I'll start with that, which is that in this photo and the other one in your film with another model, my eyes went to you second. But other than that I can't think of a single flaw! You look so pretty and your hair looks especially great, your smile is very warm and believable, you have a good connection with the camera, and you are selling me absolutely everything you are wearing, I want to go out and buy that skirt right now! And even though I noticed the other model first, you still look way better than her.
Breaking: Most of the photos of your film were quite strong, but they were also far more editorial than couture and the best ones lacked the drama to be usable, while the most couture one I just didn't really like. This is a good photo though, still a little more editorial than couture but it just fits. You look very ethereal and other-worldly, kinda like a fallen angel. Your expression is blank in a way that works, it's quite haunting really, and I like that you laid down and chose a unique angle.
CharlotteMaking: You definitely have an interesting look, but between your youthfulness and cuteness I considered you the most commercial girl here, but I'm not sure if you took that seriously based on your film. This photo does work, though it's a bit cheesy with the whole salute, it looks like it's from an American Apparel catalog. Your smile is sweet and natural though and your body looks great, and you do sell the swimsuit just fine I guess.
Breaking: This photo is a bit chilling and haunting, you look like an evil child being punished in solitary confinement. Your bone structure looks amazing and your eyes tell a story, you look pissed off and evil yet thoughtful and mysterious yet sad and lonely all that same time. Your pose is very stiff and awkward, and though I usually don't like so much stiffness, it almost works here to add to the solitary confinement effect.
NathalieMaking: You know, I doubted whether I placed you correctly, but this shot shows that you are a very strong commercial girl! I could see this as an ad for anything from a traveling agency to Tommy Hilfiger, or in any magazine from Lucky to Marie Claire. It's just a great shot; I love the motion, your interaction with the male model is wonderful, your smile is beautiful, your expression is completely believable, and you are selling the sunglasses.
Breaking: I wasn't as impressed with your couture film, it was much more editorial than anything else. This shot is no exception, it's kinda couture but still more editorial, but it definitely is stunning at least. Your face looks beautiful, you have a great connection with something in the distance, your pose is dynamic, and you somehow manage to sell those ridiculously puffy pants. If only it fit the brief better then it would be a nearly perfect picture.
COUTURE GIRLS
KateMaking: I almost put you in the editorial brand, and after going through your film, that's probably where you belong because your film wasn't particularly couture. You finally hit the couture aspect with this shot though, it's very edgy and high fashion. Even though your pose is very still without any angles, your strong expression and the eerie shadow you are casting make up for it. Your eyes are so piercing they give me chills, though they are a little uneven in the close-up so watch out for that. Great job overall though.
Breaking: I see we've already discovered your weakness. This shot isn't bad by any means, it's very cute and endearing, you actually look so nice, sweet, and relatable so good job on faking that. My problem is that you lost your model a bit here, you just look like a pretty country girl. Also, even though there's a charming aspect to your smile, your teeth look so large and awkward and take away from your model. So just work on your smile I'd say.
MarcelinaMaking: J'adore! This is sensational Marcelina, very couture. Your pose is amazing, leg extension combined with the back bend combined with your graceful arms is great, and you really sell the dress. And on top of that your expression is very haunting and you have a great connection with something in the distance. Impeccable photo.
Breaking: I had higher expectations after how strong your other photo was, but this is still good. You're selling the outfit and accessories, your face looks beautiful, your eyes are cute, and I could easily see this in an upper-end catalog like Nordstrom or Bloomingdale's. It's just not particularly exciting, with such a youthful and fresh look like yours I feel like you could've done more.
TanyaMaking: This is a little more editorial than couture, not because of the styling which is couture but more because of your lack of drama. You do look very tall, regal, and statuesque, like a new queen preparing for her coronation. Your pose and expression are nice, but they're just not particularly exciting. That's mainly what I have to say about this photo actually; it's quite nice, but it doesn't have any wow factor.
Breaking (left): This is much better to than I expected to be honest! Your smile is much more natural than I expected, your skin and hair look great, and you look very pretty and relatable. There's just something a little lacking about the expression, perhaps it's in the eyes or the overall lack of tension, but otherwise this is a lovely photo.
ThuyMaking: Your film was good, but there wasn't much wow factor to it...there was one stunning shot, but it wasn't quite high fashion enough. My biggest problem was that it was very unoriginal. This shot is beautiful though, you look so tall and majestic, and I really like the powerful stance combined with the flowing fabric. Your expression is decent, but I wish you hadn't titled your head quite so much and gave a stronger expression. Also, it's a little bit drag.
Breaking: At first I didn't see this shot as being commercial enough, but after reflecting on it some more I decided it fits enough. It looks like a cosmetics ad for Lancome or Estee Lauder, it's very natural and elegant. Your skin and bone structure look unbelievably beautiful, and the dreamy look in your eyes is very enthralling. Wonderful job!
EDITORIAL GIRLS
BambiMaking: When I first went through your film I was a little disappointed, but then this shot really grew on me. I love how sensual yet androgynous this photo is, you're unique look works well here and this is a fantastic angle for your face. Your jawline looks fantastic and you have a lovely profile, and the neck extension is also great.
Breaking (left): This is a very cute photo, I like it and it definitely works for commercial. Your smile is very charming and natural, and your eyes have a good connection with the camera. You also worked with the male model well. Great job!
KimMaking: This is a very powerful shot, I'm quite impressed! Your eyes are so fierce and piercing, and you have such a strong connection with the camera. Your pose is strong as well, I love all the angles of your pose and you sell the fur and the boots. Wonderful job, I really couldn't have asked for more!
Breaking: Your film was not so great here, Kim...you tended to either go over the top or not go far enough, so work on finding a balance. This photo is close to the balance, but still a bit underdone. You do look pretty and you are selling the camera, I could see this as a Kodak ad actually. Your legs and skin also look wonderful. Your pose is a little awkward though, as is the half-smile, you should've brought a little more life and emotion through. It's a good photo, but definitely not great.
McKeyMaking: I was afraid you wouldn't be a stand-out girl, but this is definitely a stand-out shot! First of all, legs! You've got legs for days girl and I love the way you positioned them, you look 8 feet tall! Your face also looks beautiful and you have a great connection with the camera. My only negative is that you are missing an arm, but that took me a minute to notice anyway, so otherwise amazing job!
Breaking: I thought your commercial shot would be really awkward with a joker smile, but once again you proved me wrong! This is beautiful, your smile looks pretty natural and very warm, and your eyes also look very warm and inviting yet also a little mischievous like you've got a secret. Your bone structure and skin also look great, and you are selling me a wide range of cosmetics. My only critique is that you look a little mature here, but it's still a great shot.
ShalomMaking: This is very editorial and strong, it shows that I kept you for a reason. Your face and bone structure look fantastic, and I really love your expression here. You look very envious of the other model, like you are plotting how to take her down. This photo really tells a story, which is what editorials are all about so great job.
Breaking: Wow, I'm quite impressed with your easily and naturally you transitioned into commercial. This is a very good shot, your smile is very endearing and there's even a smile in your eyes as well, everything about your expression is just working. I also do like your pose...while it's not the most fashion forward, it's cute and quirky and still works just fine for a commercial shot. My only problem is that it's a bit actressy, though it also looks a bit 90s-vintage-model so it still works just fine.
GLAMOUR GIRLS
EboniMaking: This is a very interesting photo. I think your pose is absolute perfection; your legs look amazing and the angling keeps it interesting, the booty tooch and arched back create more curves, and overall your body just looks amazing. Your face isn't quite as amazing as the pose, but still good. You look very pretty though not quite gorgeous, and your expression is sensual but you actually could've gone further with it. A very solid shot overall.
Breaking: Your body looks impossible in this photo, I don't understand it...you must be standing on a stool under that dress or something. Anyway, you look so tall and lean and statuesque, your body and the pose overall are amazing. Like your other photo though, I'm not as big a fan of your face. Your cheekbones and lips do look good, but this is a really bad angle for your nose and your eyes look very sleepy. It's still a good photo, but the face stops it short of amazing.
EnikoMaking: I really don't like the hand on the mouth, but other than that I can't think of a negative thing to say about this, it's breathtaking. Your body looks smashing, the arch in the back and booty tooch are great and ad a lot of sex appeal to this photo without making it raunchy. Your bone structure looks fabulous and your expression is very sultry and sensual. Marvelous job!
Breaking: This shot definitely works, but I feel like you lucked into it because your film wasn't very strong. This is a good photo though, the dress and the pose are very couture, I like the angling of the arms and the hunch in the back. Your face also looks very beautiful and I like the air of superiority you are giving off, but your eyes are very blank. A stronger, piercing expression would've brought this shot from good to great.
NatashaMaking: This is so effortlessly sexy, you nailed this shoot. Everything is just working from your expression to your pose, you are modeling head to toe! Your legs look amazing, I love the booty tooch and arch in the back, the arms up work fine, and the sensuality of your expression works perfectly.
Breaking: What's interesting is that the first shot in your glamour film was more high fashion than any in your couture film. This photo is a bit more editorial than high fashion, but it almost fits the brief. I positively love the symmetry of this photo, everything is perfectly symmetrical yet still interesting with the angled arms and crossed legs. I also like how this photo tells a story, you look like a modern accused witch praying or casting a spell to save herself from being shot. I don't like how your eyes were closed in both your photos though, and I wish this were more couture and less editorial.
SoniaMaking: I almost put you in commercial, so this photo shows me that you can do both, but ultimately putting you in glamour wasn't a mistake. I really like this, it reminds me of a retro pin-up girl. I like how you did something different and went for a really unique angle, laying on the floor was a risk and it paid off. Your smile is very natural, charming, and flirtatious, and you have a nice sparkle in your eyes. Your body looks great and your legs look especially wonderful.
Breaking: This isn't exactly what I was looking for, but it almost works I guess, it just isn't particularly couture. I wasn't sure if you could pull off an edgy look, but you actually do look quite edgy here, your eyes are very haunting and your overall expression is quite devilish. I also like the hunched over back, though your body looks a little weird.
