Photoshoot Judging
Aymeline
Maryna Ulta: There is obviously no denying that is a really beautiful shot. You have this amazing bone structure Aymeline, like this could legit be a Tom Ford cosmetics ad. But let's be realistic, it is waaaaaaay too intense for Ulta. Ulta is meant to appeal to all kinds of customers, and this isn't the type of photo that is going to do that.
Maryna AV: I have no idea where this girl came from but wow! I mean this is so unlike you. Its so soft and beautful and serene. I remember watching you on set and there was one pose you did I thought was perfection, but this is just as great too! I see you finally listened to me about how to pose in a feminime way and my gosh your face is sooo beautiful as well.
Liya Ulta: Aymeline, I think it's barely necessary to critique this because you probably already know what's coming. This is an absolutely gorgeous photo and would work very well for a designer cosmetics brand like Armani or Givenchy, but it's too edgy and unapproachable for Ulta, and almost a little drag. Also, there's a slight asymmetry to your features that bothers me a little here.
Liya AV: I really like this shot Aymeline, and I also have to commend you for many reasons because it shows you took all of your critiques to heart. It's a different look for you and you have both a strong face and pose matched up finally. I think your body looks great, your eyes are smoldering, and overall this works as a cover. I do think it looks more like an international Vogue cover as opposed to American Vogue though, and I don't like your nose here, but overall it's a strong shot and still works for the cover.
Hilary Ulta: Aymeline, you have my favorite shot for the Ulta shoot disregarding the client, hands down. But when we bring in the client, I'm not sure how well it would sell with them. Though sometimes they do go a little edgier, I think this may be too strong. Your eyes look amazing and they are piercing the lens, your cheekbones look razor sharp, and your lips look gorgeous. You sell the makeup amazingly actually, but I think had you gone softer, you would have benefited a little bit more.
Hilary AV: Now this, I'm really surprised at. When I saw this photo, I almost stopped looking through your film right there because it is so perfect for the client. There is such a softness and a youth that really fits American Vogue. There is a little sexiness in there which I like because it shows that versatility that we know you have. The body looks amazing and I love the pose. It's straight on, simple, and strong. Everything that a cover needs. The face has a light expression to it which really delivers for the client. I really wish that you brought that during Ulta
Joan
Maryna Ulta: You better work! Joan this is the best Ulta shot in the bunch for me. Even if it wasn't for Ulta it would still be the best individual one in the bunch. My god you look absolutely beautiful! Your skin is shining, your eyes are full of life and confidence and you are selling that lipstick like nobody's business. I could see women pass by this photo and go into the store wanting to look like you. Im blown away.
Maryna AV: Stunning. Again you are just so beautiful and shots like these that show that off are what suit you best. Your bone structure, lips, eyes, all flawless. I love how you are so elegant but also strong, something about the way you positioned your hand gives off this confidence. That being said I do see what Hilary means about it being edgy, its kinda bordering the Vogue Italia line.
Liya Ulta: Let me start by saying that I had a difficult time choosing a shot for you; I was torn between this shot and one that fit the Ulta aesthetic a little better, but in the end I couldn't pass this shot up and I think it still fits. You look so gorgeous and glamorous yet still warm and inviting. I want to buy that lipstick right now and your skin also looks great, and your eye has so much life in it. My only critique is that I wish you had pushed your hair out of the way more because it's a little distracting, but overall your lips are still the focus and I love the shot.
Liya AV: I also went in between two shots for you for this shoot, and once again I chose the one that wasn't quite as spot-on for the aesthetic but was an incredible shot. You look so pristine, regal, and posh here Joan, and your bone structure just looks superb. This would absolutely stand out on a newsstand and I would buy it in a heartbeat, my only critique is that I would have liked a little more warmth to fit the American Vogue aesthetic more.
Hilary Ulta: I really like this photo of you, Joan. It's commercial, but not super bubbly and I like that. It's more subtle. Your skin looks amazing and your lips look perfect: I really like that half smile. When I get to your eyes however, I feel like there is something lacking. It's just kind of blank to me and I noticed that when we were on set. In such a close up shot, the eyes really need to draw the viewer in for the ad to be successful. That's the only fault I can find though.
Hilary AV: I think it's a little too strong, Joan. American Vogue is definitely the Vogue that is the most commercial globally and I don't think you captured that here. The face is very stern and while it's beautiful, I do see a little bit of an uncomfortableness in your expression. It's also too strong, once again. The hand up making the fist also adds to the toughness that isn't American Vogue. I saw you on set and you did a few frames where you were smiling and laughing and I honestly thought that those were perfection. I think shot choice kind of screwed you here, but then again, you should have never given the option to choose a bad shot because they should all be amazing.
Kendra
Maryna Ulta: You have such a classically beautiful face, its what I love the most about you. Your lips look so lovely in this photo Kendra and that's good because you are clearly selling the product. Your eyes have a little life in them and the neck extension is great, only thing I don't like is the hand.
Maryna AV: Gorgous. I finally see you really pushing it in a photo. Your face is so beautiful and elegant but also intense and fearless, it could have gone a bit too intense but I think because you are so pretty it didnt come off as harsh, and that outfit looks great on you. It really brings out your classic beauty, I really like this and think its a strong photo overall, though I do feel like you could have done better.
Liya Ulta: Out of all the girls this week I had the highest expectations for you because you fit the aesthetic of both shoots so well, but I'm a little let down by this. It's a beautiful photo that fits the aesthetic in which you do sell the makeup and I do like the dreaminess of the photo, but it's just not a shot that grabs my attention really. It would make a good ad for sure, but not necessarily a great one.
Liya AV: I have basically the same critique for this shot as your Ulta one; it's a pretty good photo overall in which you look beautiful and get the job done, but nothing about this goes above and beyond for me. I think you're almost there with the expression and almost there with the pose, but you didn't quite nail either. And like your Ulta shot, it's definitely a good and passable cover but not one that would stand out much.
Hilary Ulta: Your look was designed for this entire week and to be honest, I was let down. This Ulta shot should have been amazing. You have the most commercial look in the competition and Ulta could have been drooling over you. You actually have my least favorite shot this week. The eyes are weak and the expression looks like you're about to cry when a cosmetic ad should bring in the reader. I don't think this would make anyone want to buy that makeup
Hilary AV: Kendra, once again, you have the American Vogue look and you missed the mark. It's a gorgeous shot and I don't think anyone can deny that, but I think it's too strong for American Vogue. They like the pretty girls and you are the prettiest girl in the competition so I didn't think this shoot would be an issue for you, but I just feel like it's too intense.
Natasha
Maryna Ulta: You made me SO proud on that set Natasha. I did not think at all that you would tone it down for the shoot but you did! And on your first frame! Your skin is radiant, I wish my foundation did that! And your eyes are so lovely, the whole shot just radiates this confidence but also warmth. This is only 2nd to Joan's this week and just by a margin.
Maryna AV: Again you surprised the heck out of me! I didnt think you could do soft but you did, and might I say, this is, BY FAR, my favorite shot of you. You look like this elegant sophisticated lady, your posing is simple, but not 101, its effortless and shows off the clothing. I love your hair in the wind and there is such a softness but also confidence in your expression. Might I also add you look freaking beautiful. Ive always seen you as one of those very sexy ultra glamour girl but this week you showed a whole new natural side of you and I fell in love.
Liya Ulta: I was a little worried for you in this shoot because you are the least fresh of all the girls, and while I would have liked more freshness in the shot, I actually think you did very well. Your expression is soft and inviting, your eyes and skin look beautiful, you nailed the look we wanted, and you sell the makeup. Great job overall.
Liya AV: You definitely captured the American Vogue look the best out of all the girls, this cover completely fits their aesthetic and I could easily see it as a Fall cover today. You look very beautiful and sophisticated and proud, yet still approachable, and you do a good job of working with your outfit. There's nothing that quite makes this pop, but it absolutely works as a cover that I am sure Vogue would be happy to publish.
Hilary Ulta: This is definitely one of the better ads this week. You're warm and inviting and that's what an ad needs. You sell the makeup beautifully. Your face is just gorgeous and it shows here. I don't really have much to say because it's a beautiful shot that gets the job done, but it doesn't have that extra special thing that makes me say "Wow, that's amazing."
Hilary AV: American Vogue: I definitely think it fits American Vogue. You're not up there smiling, your expression is actually pretty intense, but you created a warmth about you that makes it less harsh. Your body is simple, yet strong. My one critique is that you do look older in the face. Something about how the lighting caught your face makes you look older than you are.
